Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation (MAPT)

The AU$1.7 billion Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation (MAPT) is set to be the largest cultural infrastructure project ever undertaken in Australia.

The redevelopment of the MAP includes several key elements to be delivered by 2028:

• The Fox: NGV Contemporary gallery
• A new 18,000 square metre urban garden filled with biodiverse planting, public art and places for rest

Significant upgrades to Arts Centre Melbourne’s heritage Theatres BuildingThis comprehensive redevelopment aims to cement the MAPT's status as Melbourne's foremost hub for arts, culture, and creativity. The redevelopment goals include:

• Confirming and establishing the vision for the future redevelopment of the MAPT
• Developing planning and design guidelines for the Public Realm and development sites (ACM, 1 City Road, NGVC)
• Determine a holistic services strategy for the future operation of the precinct

The accessibility and universal design experts, as part of the Hassell – SO-IL Urban Garden design team, have advised through the Functional Brief, Master Plan and now design stages of the project. They prioritised the accessibility and inclusion needs of all people, creating vital connections between the five major arts facilities and the adjacent South Bank precinct. Throughout the design process, the team ensured the "user experience" aligned with Universal Design principles while adhering to relevant technical standards.
